The minimum grade required to transfer a course to the University of Waterloo is 70% for college courses (75% for Faculty of Science students), and 60% for university courses.

Transfer credit is reviewed on a course-by-course basis and may be granted as a direct equivalency (e.g. PSYCH 101), a non-specific credit (e.g. PSYCH 1XX), or a general miscellaneous elective (e.g. MISC 1XX).

The amount of transfer credit a student can receive is dictated by the University of Waterloo’s residency policy whereby at least 50% of courses must be completed at the University of Waterloo (a maximum of 10 units [20 courses] in a 4-year degree and 7.5 units [15 courses] in a 3-year degree). In addition, some programs may further limit the amount of transfer credit granted.
Students must meet all requirements of the University of Waterloo academic plan to graduate, regardless of the number of transfer credits that they receive. -
Currency is dependent on the faculty to which a student is admitted:
Faculty of Arts:
- Courses completed within the past 10 years, prior to admission, will be considered.
- Courses completed beyond 10 years, prior to admission, will be consider on a case-by-case basis and will most often receive non-specific credit.
Faculty of Engineering:
- In rare cases, very limited transfer credit may be considered for university courses that are completed within the past 3 years prior to admission.
- Transfer credit is not granted for college courses.
Faculty of Environment:
- Courses completed within the past 10 years, prior to admission, will be considered.
- Courses completed beyond 10 years, prior to admission, will be consider on a case-by-case basis and will most often receive non-specific credit.
Faculty of Health:
- Courses completed within the past 5 years, prior to admission, will be considered.
- Courses completed within the past 5 to 10 years, prior to admission, may receive non-specific credit.
- Courses completed more than 10 years ago, prior to admission, are not eligible for transfer credit.
Faculty of Mathematics:
- Courses completed within the past 10 years, prior to admission, will be considered.
Faculty of Science:
- Courses completed within the past 10 years, prior to admission, will be considered.

The University of Waterloo does not grant PLAR credit. Credits granted by another institution on the basis of PLAR are not transferrable to Waterloo.

Transfer credit is indicated on the official University of Waterloo transcript as “T” and is not included in the calculation of the GPA.

Follow these steps to receive a transfer credit assessment from the University of Waterloo:
- An Admissions Officer is matched with each transfer student. The Officer oversees the application, admission and transfer credit procedures and provides guidance to the student along the way.
- Transfer credit assessments begin at the time of admission. After supporting documents have been submitted, the offer of admission has been confirmed, and course syllabi have been reviewed, the student is apprised of their assessment and will then consult with their academic advisor on course enrollment for their program.
- All transfer credit assessments are conditional upon the receipt of official final transcripts.

At the University of Waterloo, transfer credit assessment is a service that is automatically included in the application fee charged by the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC).

Official final transcripts are required from high school and all post-secondary institutions attended, along with copies of the instructors’ syllabi for courses that have not been previously or recently evaluated.

Students are not required to apply for transfer credit assessment at the University of Waterloo. Instead, assessments are performed automatically as part of the admissions process.

Transfer credit assessments begin when offers of admission are released. At the University of Waterloo, most transfer students receive their offers on a rolling basis prior to the published confirmation deadline.
Transfer credit assessments are performed individually on a case-by-cases basis and are guided by each student’s submission of supporting documents by the stipulated deadlines (e.g. official final transcripts and course syllabi).

Transfer credit assessments are based on the policies of the faculty to which a student has been admitted, and each course has been officially reviewed and approved by professionals in each department. If a student decides to transfer to
another faculty or program in the future, their transfer credits may be reviewed, and possibly changed, based on the policies of the new faculty or program.
